George Bush Intercontinental Airport Guide

AVR understands that not everyone is a travel expert and sometimes a simple guide to help you navigate a busy airport is all you need. Don’t stress, not only do we have the perfect guide to help anyone navigate Houston airport, but we will also showcase some great rest options or eateries to keep you entertained while waiting for your flight.

Navigating the airport is not a hard task as many signs help navigate lost or confused travelers and like most airports, IAH is broken down into terminals with a tram that runs through them. If you have enough time and want to shop, the airport is full of shopping opportunities from the automated electronic and cosmetic kiosks to the Duty-Free stores available in all terminals. Even luxury brands like Swarovski and Chanel can be found within the airport. If you need a place to charge your electronics or work on your laptop, there are charging stations and outlets across the terminals and near gates. Wi-Fi is complimentary and charging stations that offer rapid charging can be found as well, but they require a fee and usually don’t work with older devices.

When it comes to eating, IAH has some amazing options. Below are some of our personal favorites by terminal, but there are plenty of others to consider. For a full list, see here.

When it comes to trying to relax or shower up before your flight, IAH has a multitude of options from Airport Lounges to an onsite hotel. Most of the airport lounges require some kind of airline rewards membership or card holder status to gain access too but check ahead as there are municipal ones for anyone to use. Marriott hotels is on site within the airport and can be the perfect place to relax for a long overnight layover. You can always see if the airport has day room rates which allow travelers to use the room for the day, but not necessarily overnight. Showers are offered in some airport lounges and are a great way to freshen up and relax before your flight.

Entertainment Tips for Long Layovers

To best enjoy Houston during a long layover, you should have at least six hours to work with. Taxis are the quickest way to get to the city, but you can also take the bus. You should have just enough time to take a stroll through downtown or maybe check out a museum like the Houston Museum of Natural Science. If you have a lot of time and give yourself the whole day, you could also pay a visit to the Houston Space Center. It's not close to the airport, but a chance to see real space shuttles and astronaut suits make for a unique experience that only Houston can provide.
